Victoria Falls, the once most renowned tourist resort, used to attract millions of spectators to its spectacular cataract, as well Las-Vegas stylish African casino, brimming with popular games such as roulette, slots, blackjack. Zimbabwe’s revenues from tourism have recently experienced a drastic downfall from $700-million back in 1999 to merely $60 million last year. Whereas the majority of foreigners are now favoring the safe side itinerary to the Livingstone in Zambia, located on the opposite side of the falls.
The reason for such melancholic atmosphere and prevailing emptiness at the roulette tables with a bunch of yawning visitors are the besieged crocodiles. They’ve occupied a decorative moat that embraces the hotel walls and the desolate rooms portray the unrelenting downfall of what once was the most vibrant tourist canal.
There are still some South African tourists who come to see Victoria Falls and spin the roulette wheel one in a while, but they are scarce as well and don’t spend as much money on the town’s shops and restaurants.
