According to the testimony of one of the West Jakarta residents, the police has been selective in terms of which clandestine gambling dens to terminate and which to ignore. It seems that the more established among them win a blind eye from police officers, allowing the roulette spinning to go on undisturbed.
In the north of Jakarta, where large gambling dens are mushrooming, oddly, only eight roulette machines were impounded and no high rollers were seized. A senior police officer at the Jakarta headquarter maintained that for a long period of time many police officers were bribed by the casino managers, informing them when the raid is to take place. Essentially, the major concern of these police chiefs was to keep their position at all cost and not to permanently eject gambling operations.
Shortly after the tantrum of swooping on these gambling congregations, many such businesses are reopening after the public’s eyes are seemingly sedated.
