In 2006, Don Siegelman might try running for Governor for the second time, after his successful campaign in 1998. If he decides to run for the job, he is expected to win the campaign.
The main issue dominating Siegelman's campaign is his wish to levy taxes on tribal casinos, a tax which is forbidden by federal laws. Arthur Mothershed, the tribe's chief financial officer, replied that the tribe would be willing to try and work out a tax settlement with the state government – if the state were to allow tribal casinos to have table games, such as Roulette and Blackjack. Roulette, Craps and all table games are currently prohibited in Alabama casinos.
Bob Riley, the current Governor of Alabama, has said nothing about Siegelman's plans and possible future campaign, but he mentioned many times previously that “Hades will freeze over” before he'd agree to let the Indians have table games, even if the state earns extra taxes from them.
