According to West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, the decision whether or not to allow table games like roulette and blackjack in West Virginia casinos will not be influenced by factors such as sales tax or state employee pay raises.
West Virginia is expected to lower their reliance on gambling-based income by 2008 or 2009, so some lawmakers are reluctant to allow an increase in gambling at this point. Many West Virginia citizens object to the video poker terminals which have sprung up all over the state, and the governor expects that there may be strenuous objection from residents to allowing casino game expansion.
On the other hand, it is possible that state residents would allow table games such as roulette in exchange for phasing out the video poker games. The state’s racetrack casinos claim that they need table games to counteract the loss in revenues that will be caused by Pennsylvania’s legalization of slot machines.
From the governor’s statement, it appears that legalization of roulette and other table games is a possibility, but only if that is the will of the voters. |
