A new study by the University of Dundee in Scotland claims that an increasing number of Scottish women are turning to online gambling in an attempt to “escape” difficulties such as failed personal relationships and depression. The women are seduced by free online casino games (with roulette being among the top of the list), and many ultimately become addicted, endlessly punching in their credit card numbers for deposits.
According to one of the researchers, the reason many women keep the problem a secret is the fact that they believe they will be refused any help or treatment from social services once the reason behind their debts is revealed.
Merely a month ago, a Dundee couple was jailed after severely neglecting their children due to online gambling addictions. The sheriff said that the children's living conditions were as bad as could be imagined, after one of the children, age seven, had to have all of her teeth removed.
Gamblers Anonymous reports an ever increasing incident rate of women callers, seeking help for online gambling addictions. The government has only recently begun to understand that people can develop problems through online gambling, although it seems that not much is currently being done about the situation.
In the mean time, more and more women turn to online casinos, some of whom end up turning a friendly online roulette game into a tragic game of internet Russian roulette. |
