Paddy Power PLC, Ireland's leading bookmaker, removed its new billboard campaign Wednesday. The billboards, which portrayed Jesus with his disciples at the Last Supper table playing roulette and other casino games, caused a dramatic uproar among many of Dublin's residents, who found it offensive and complained to Ireland's Advertising Standards Authority.
The company also received complaints for advertising billboards that portrayed people betting on two old ladies using walkers to cross the street.
Despite the campaign being called good-humored by the Irish Times, Dublin Archbishop John Neill of the Anglican-affiliated Church of Ireland reported that the Jesus playing roulette image would most likely be offensive to the majority of Christians. |
