At least four different Sacramento groups have canceled or postponed fund-raising casino events in the past few weeks. The state Department of Justice has decided to put an end to these events, which use Las Vegas style games, such as roulette, to raise funds. Although the agency has yet to take legal action against any of the groups, they have made it clear that only tribe casinos or licensed card rooms are permitted to hold these type of games.
A Department of Justice spokesperson has reported that although the agency is generally considerate towards charities, its latest actions are the results of complaints by the public. Several nonprofit groups have already turned to lawmakers, requesting exceptions. |
