An acute rise in gambling online and at roulette machines has motivated the UK Gambling Commission to draft a new set of standards to keep problem gambling under wraps. The Gambling Commission published a draft of its Conditions and Codes of Practice late last week as a measure to keep children and otherwise susceptible individuals from developing a crippling gambling habit either online or on land. The Conditions and Codes of Practice are expected to take effect in September, 2007.
This set of regulations will increase the casino's responsibility for promoting normative gambling habits and preventing the opposite phenomenon. Among the tenets of the Conditions and Codes are requirements for gambling operators to adopt policies that promote responsible gambling and train their staffs to understand and be able to handle problem gambling cases. In addition, in order to help ensure that gamblers don't unknowingly blow hours upon hours at roulette machines or the like, the document would also require gambling operators to let visitors know exactly how much time they've gambled.
