Statistics were recently released by Nottingham Trent University estimating that £50 billion ($89 billion) were gambled in the UK last year. When divided by the State's population, including men, women, and children, this translates into over £800 gambled per capita. The gambling industry has the UK government in part to thank for these astounding figures. Last year, the government adopted measures that, generally speaking, relaxed gambling regulations across the State.
With the expansion of gambling, however, comes a healthy supply of gambling addicts. According to one estimation, approximately 370,000 people in the UK are currently addicted to roulette and other gambling games. And Britons have no shortage of places to gamble. Across the UK, there are 130 small casinos, in addition to 8,500 betting shops where gamblers can bet on horses, dogs, virtual roulette wheels, and slot machines.
