On the eve of Game 1 of the NBA Finals in Dallas, Texas, Pat Riley, head coach of the NBA 2005-2006 champion team Miami Heat, gave a winning roulette tip to team owner Micky Arison. Upon learning that Arison was traveling to Las Vegas, Riley reportedly told him to bet 10 times on the number '15' at the roulette wheel. Although he refused to reveal how much money he received from the coach for the bet, Arison did share that Riley told him that he was confident the number would ultimately come out.
Riley, known for his successful motivational speeches and his unique approach to competition, did not choose the aforementioned roulette bet at random: he felt strongly about the number '15' because of his team's mantra – "15 strong." Surprisingly enough, on the sixth spin, the roulette ball stopped on '15'. With the team's victory less than two weeks later at the NBA Finals, Riley proved once again the success of his coaching tips, be it at a roulette wheel or on the basketball court.
