The group, due to speak at the Liberal Democrats conference in Brighton will be led by the party’s culture and sport spokesman Don foster, who said that when Blackpool lost to Manchester, it was immediately promised regeneration funds. Foster felt that whatever people may feel about having a casino in Manchester, preparing the bid took a considerable amount of money, and Manchester should be compensated.
Joining him in the demand will be the Withington MP John Leech, who admitted to have reservations about the super casinos, but was optimistic Prime Minister Gordon Brown would come up with the regeneration money needed.
The leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the city council, Simon Ashley, said: "If Gordon Brown has a moral objection to a super casino he also has a moral obligation to fund an alternative regeneration package."
The super casinos project was thrown into doubt when the House of Lords rejected a package of casinos. Then Mr. Brown killed the East Manchester super casino plans. And although ministers are technically still investigating the casino plans it seems unlikely they will be revived. The Prime Minister has been quoted as saying that he feels that there are better ways of regenerating areas than by building casinos. |
